Wheeler Placed On Baseball America’s Hot Sheet

One of, if not the, most respected baseball magazine has added Tulsa Drillers centerfielder to its Hot Sheet for the week of July 1 through July 8. Baseball America is widely known as being the Holy Grail for those who seek baseball knowledge. The magazine reports from high school baseball, to the major leagues and anything in between.

Baseball America publishes a weekly report ranking the top minor league players from the previous week in their eyes. The rankings are determined not only be statistical information the players produce over the week but also how Baseball America ranks them as a future MLB prospect.

The magazine had this to say about Wheeler:

Wheeler’s breakout season keeps rolling. The 2009 first-round pick out of Sacramento State hit .252/.338/.383 with 17 home runs in his first season and a half, and this year his power outburst has produced one of the best offensive seasons in the minors. Wheeler has 22 homers in 82 games, with a .316/.398/.602 line that gives him a pretty 1.000 OPS. He has always had plus raw power, but there were questions about how usable it would be. Wheeler is answering those questions with a home run total that ties him for fourth in the minors, just three behind minor league leader Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks.

Wheeler increased his Texas League home run total Thursday night against the Corpus Christi Hooks. Not only did he hit two home runs on Thursday, Wheeler showed his power to all fields as his home run to left field was an impressive display of opposite field power.

Baseball America writer J.J. Cooper talked about the centerfielder earlier Friday in an open chat session with fans, “I did a personal Top 100 before we put together out Top 50 and I had him at No. 53 on that list. If he keeps this up over the second half of the season he’s a sure-fire Top 100 Prospect next February.”

Former Driller Making Impression At Highest Level

After a 2010 season in High-A Modesto leading the league in innings (177.1) and strikeouts (171) Juan Nicasio was promoted to Double-A Tulsa in the beginning of the 2011 season. It was expected from the Colorado Rockies organization that Nicasio would have to build on a successful 2010 season if the native Dominican wanted to pitch in the big leagues. What wasn’t expected is that Nicasio would make his major league debut before the All-Star break in 2011.

Nicasio began the season going 5-1 with the Drillers through nine starts in 2011, compiling 63 strikeouts in only 56.2 innings pitched while posting a 2.22 earned run average, tops in the Texas League.

On May 28, 2011 Juan Nicasio made his debut for the Colorado Rockies against the St. Louis Cardinals at Coors Field. He went seven strong innings allowing only six hits and one unearned run, recording his first major league victory.

Over the last month Nicasio has been a spark plug-in the Rockies starting rotation going 3-1 with a 4.10 earned run average in seven starts with the club.

As the Drillers try to clinch the Texas League North in the second half and a playoff berth, unfortunately for Drillers fans it’s not looking like Nicasio will be back any time soon to help.

The Tulsa Drillers will be back at ONEOK Field on July 14th taking on the Arkansas Travelers at 7:05 PM.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders To Come To ONEOK Field

The world-renowned Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be visiting ONEOK Field this summer to entertain fans at the Drillers game on Saturday, July 23. The Tulsa Drillers are offering 100 fans the opportunity to attend a private party with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders prior to the game on July 23. Tickets for the “Meet and Greet” are priced at $75 per person.

Each ticket will include a one hour visit with 10 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, an autographed cheer team photo, a personal 8 x 10 photograph with all 10 cheerleaders, an All-You-Can-Eat Oklahoma BBQ Buffet, exclusive access to the Drillers Conference Center, as well as your game ticket to that night’s game.

Beerer Records Drillers Only Base Hit In Texas League All-Star Game

Wednesday night was the 75th Annual Texas League All-Star Game. The game matched the North All-Stars made up of the Tulsa Drillers, Northwest Arkansas Naturals, Arkansas Travelers and Springfield Cardinals against the South All-Stars with the San Antonio Missions, Frisco Roughriders, Midland RockHounds, and Corpus Christi Hooks making up the roster for the home team. The South All-Stars would use the home field advantage by beating the North All-Stars 3-2 in a wonderful display of pitching by the South’s pitching staff.

The San Antonio Missions played host of the All-Star game with Wolff Stadium providing the back-drop for some of Minor League Baseball’s brightest young stars.

The Drillers were well represented in the games, as the team sent seven players to participate in the festivities. Tim Wheeler, Wilin Rosario, Scott Beerer, Darin Holcomb, Ben Paulsen, Christian Friedrich, and Joe Torres were all selected to take part on the Texas League North team.

The game started out slow for the North All-Stars and Tulsa starters Wheeler, Paulsen, and Rosario. The trio combined to go 0-9, as the North failed to score until the top of the sixth.

Tulsa Drillers starter Christian Friedrich came in relief of the North All-Star starter Garret Richards in the second inning, with most pitchers in the game only throwing one inning.

Friedrich pitched his one inning, giving up three hits and one earned run. Friedrich was eventually took the loss for the North All-Star team however the stats were not counted towards Texas League records.

Scott Beerer recorded the Drillers only hit of the night. The left fielder pinch-hit for Wheeler in the seventh inning. Beerer singled on a fly ball that landed out of the reach of the right fielder.

Joe Torres, who replaced injured Drillers reliever Stephen Dodson on the North roster, came into the game in the eighth inning.

After Torres gave up a leadoff double he went on to record the next two outs before being replaced by Michael Blazek.

The North All-Stars only produced two runs on seven hits as the South pitchers had their way all night long. The game was a great display of future major league hopefuls shining on the brightest night the Texas League has to offer.

Hot Weather, Hot Bat:  As the weather has warmed up, so has second baseman Tommy Field’s bat.  Field is hitting .277 in the month of June with 17 RBI, while posting an impressive .369 on base percentage.  His five home runs in the month tie him with Beerer and Tim Wheeler for the team lead.

Attendance: The Drillers are currently second in the Texas League in average paid attendance, attracting 5,593 fans per opening at ONEOK Field.

4th of July:  Because of the scheduled post-game Fireworks display, the July 4 game will not be a $1.00 Dog Night.

Rockies Announce Prospects To Participate In MLB All-Star Futures Game

On Thursday Major League Baseball and Baseball America announced the rosters for the 2011 All-Star Futures Game, to be played in Phoenix on July 10. The game will be played by a two 25-man rosters made up of 10 pitchers, two catchers, five outfielders, and eight infielders. All of whom are considered top prospects in each of their respected organization and position.

Each roster would be made up of players entirely from either the United States or the rest of the World.

The Rockies were one of a hand full of teams that were selected to have more than one player participate in the game.

Nolan Arenado will represent the Rockies as one of the corner infielders on the United States team. Arenado was a high school shortstop who has now moved to third base and might end up as Todd Helton’s heir at first base in Colorado. His power bat should play at either position.

Colorado will also send Tulsa Drillers catcher Wilin Rosario to take part as the back-up catcher for the World team. This will be Wilin’s second appearance in the All-Star Futures Game as he is ranked one of the top catching prospects in all of Minor League Baseball.

Rosario was actually having his breakout season last year, but a torn ACL in August cut that short. He has picked up where he left off, though, offering premium tools at the plate and behind it.Rosariois currently second on the Drillers with 11 home runs through the first half of the season.
